This grand caterpillar - apparently of an Emperor Moth - was undulating purposefully down the Glen Massan road this afternoon, right where wheels of the next passing vehicle would pass over it. I couldn't bear the thought of something so plump and green being squished, so we guided it, with the use of a short twig, to move towards the side of the road. It actually proved quite resistant to this idea, so in the end, when it actually crawled onto the stick, I lifted it onto a tall leaf at the side of the road.

Two minutes later a large 4x4 swept past us ...
