The Most Northerly Peach Tree in the World?

Our neighbour and colleague Ann phoned us up and invited us round to pick peaches. She’d picked all she could handle and the peaches were just dropping off the tree because they were so ripe.
What makes this special is that this peach tree lives in a greenhouse in the middle of Sweden. What’s more the greenhouse is unheated in winter so the tree has to survive fairly low temperatures (-20°C).
Naturally we headed for the greenhouse and picked peaches. When they are so ripe they have to be dealt with immediately so now, later in the day we are replete after eating peach crumble, Jan has produced 18 jars of peach jam, the freezer has enough sliced peaches for a two more crumbles and there’s enough peaches left for the evening’s production of around another 15 jars of jam.
PS As we left the greenhouse we marvelled at the other ripening peach tree, the grapes, the ripening apricots and the wonderful flowers, as well as the more usual tomatoes and peppers.
Our neighbours have transported a little slice of the Mediterranean to mid Sweden!
