Ramblings and Mutterings

Beautiful Budapest

Almost a full day wandering Budapest today as the flight back wasn’t until 6ish.

I must have walked miles today around this beautiful city.

I walked up the banks of the river Danube first to see the famous chain bridge built by British engineer William Clark.  Built between 1839-1849 it still stands proudly over the Danube.  Pre-Brexit we were good at exporting our skills across the world.

I then wandered up to the Parliament building, passing the Jewish Shoes memorial along the banks of the Danube.  It’s quite haunting to see these shoes, kids, women and men all mixed and shot by militia during World War Two.

The Parliament buildings were very beautiful with a number of imposing statues around the place.

Next to Saint Stephen’s Basilica, and a chance to climb the tower to the top and see the sights of Budapest high up.  The Basilica is very beautiful, with some grand stained glass windows.

Next stop was the fantastic Opera House, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to do the tour.  I bet that’s something else.

A walk back along the Danube, with a number of these figures.  There were quite a few of them scattered around the city and I thought they were brilliant.

When we arrived back at the airport it was chaos, first our flight was delayed, then there was pushing and shoving at check-in, a long wander through security with not much help from the staff before we finally got on the plane.  When we finally landed back at Heathrow the co-pilot was chuffed to tell us that we’d caught up all of the time we’d lost, only to lose it all again on the ground as the gate wasn’t free when we landed.  Nightmare!
