Father of the Garden of Weedin'

The man on the four-wheeler is Doug. He and his family have worked the land and built community with their neighbors for two generations. Doug purchased an old clapboard church and had it moved to his land as a venue for community meetings. When he had to give up his large animals because they were too much for him, Doug made a gift of the land where his horses and cows had pooped for two generations: he let his neighbors use it as a community vegetable garden called Garden of Weedin'. It’s a beautifully planned, carefully laid-out garden, with raised beds for lettuces, carrots, kale, and chard; and tidy rows of squash, tomato plants, cabbages, sunflowers, green beans, and flowers that attract pollinators and repel pests. The bounty of the garden goes first to those who care for it, but it always exceeds their needs. The rest goes to the Food Pantry to feed local people who don’t have land and can’t afford to buy fresh vegetables. The community includes Sue’s sister (now Blipping as RavensRoost) and brother-in-law; he designed and built the irrigation system for the raised beds and helps to manage the garden, and she helps out when she has time away from her job as a college administrator. Extras include one shot inside the garden and one shot of nearby wheatfields, snow-covered Mt. Adams rising up beyond them.
