Detail of Old Billingsgate Wharf

... or the New Key as it was called in 1720.

Numerous generations of engineering, each shoring up its ancestors.

Billingsgate Dock and the New Key became the most important landing place in London in the late 16th century when merchant ships became too large to pass London Bridge. Now a venue and event space frequented by tourists the area had been a general market before evolving into the largest specialist fish market in the world in the 19th Century.
