Bikeway

It is nice to see one of these signs again.

One of my proudest achievements was the LaPorte County Bikeway System as represented by this sign.

Basically I worked in 1999 and 2000 as a volunteer about half time having retired as a Facility Planner for Whirlpool Corporation..

Working with County Parks, City Parks, National Park Service, County Commissioners, Mayors, Convention Bureau, Solid Waste District, County Highway Department, and Purdue Extension Director, we accomplished this project.

Although I did most of the detail work, our County Extension Director had all the contacts and brought together this varied group. At all stages of the project nobody said "No". It was a great example of Intergovernmental Cooperation.

Using existing roads, a 20 loop, 420 mile system was installed. The towns and parks in the county were connected by the bikeways. Money for signage came from the Convention Visitors Bureau and the Solid Waste District. Each loop was color coded to represent nearby high school colors. Actually the arrow sticker on the right should be orange. We also
installed CVB logos and Recycle Logos.

I could go on forever but I must update Lois' situation. She is waking and the next goal is to remove the ventilator tubing. In the meantime we are under a TORNADO WARNING and I am writing this in the hospital's basement while we wait for the "All Clear".
