Inside Out

You don’t expect to see clothes hanging from a tree when walking by the river, but we were actually looking for these. They are part of a River Art Trail in Appleby.

The art trail of felted sculptures tells the story of the 2015 Floods in Appleby, the sculptures having been created by local residents who were affected by the floods. Some of the sculptures represent the personal items that were taken out of homes by the flood waters and displaced along the riverbank and the fields (hence the title of the trail and of my blip). I remember seeing such items when we came into town after the floods – a moving sight and here a symbol of the upheaval that many people suffered.

There may be more of these posted in the next few weeks!!

After all the rain yesterday, the river is much higher than it was. It is flowing quite fast and is brown because of the sediment that is being added, as water pours in from further upstream and from the land around. It just shows how quickly water levels can rise.
