Greenwich

We made a late decision today to go into London to see the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition.  For the last five years, this exhibition has been at the Royal Geographical Society building in Exhibition Road, South Kensington.  However, this year it has moved to a new location: the University of Greenwich's Stockwell Street building "in the heart of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site".

I was pleased to see that, despite the change, the exhibition was still very busy.  I spoke to one of the organisers (I think it was probably Chris Coe, the founder of the competition) who reckoned that the total attendance this year at the new site is heading for around half the massive 51,000 visitors the show had last year.  He admitted that they will have to build up a new audience at the new location, and they are not permitted to put up signage outside (presumably a constraint of the World Heritage Site) to attract passers-by - ie you need to know the exhibition is there before you go.  However, he seemed optimistic, and the exhibition space is light and airy and the photographs, as always, are stunningly good. Well worth visiting.

Afterwards we wandered around for a while in the grounds of the old Royal Naval College, with its splendid buildings, archways and courtyards.  This fountain is between the Dreadnought and  King William buildings.

A final stop for a quick meal in a restaurant overlooking the River Thames before returning home.  Another very enjoyable day.
