Annexing the Apple

The waxeyes scatter when the bellbird arrives. She is a lot bigger than they are, 20 cm from head to tail, compared with the waxeyes' 12 cm. Their strategy of shaking their wings to ward off opposition has no effect on her. She has only to burst forth with her magnificent territorial song and they are gone!

In large you can see her whiskers, and a sneaky bluebottle.

Bellbird, Anthornis melanura, endemic to New Zealand.

Waxeye, Zosterops lateralis, native to NZ, Australia and some South Pacific Islands.
