Night Stair

I went through to Hexham this morning and saw in the Abbey the photographic exhibition of the society to which walkingMarj belongs. walkingMarj herself was stewarding today, so we were able to talk about the photographs (and about creaky knees). There were many visitors however and she was kept very busy greeting and talking with them. A really lovely venue and the pictures have been beautifully displayed.

I took lots of photos in the Abbey, but decided to post this picture of the night stairs. They are a striking feature of the Abbey and are apparently ‘one of the finest monastic survivals in an English church’ (or so it says in the Guide Book). I liked them for the worn treads, testimony to the devotion of generations of monks, but I also like the patina and colour of the stone, as it has aged over the centuries, and looking wonderful as the sun streamed in.
