Warbling in the reeds...

Fen Cottage, Wicken Fen

"Wicken Fen, one of Europe's most important wetlands, supports an abundance of wildlife. There are more than 8,500 species, including a spectacular array of plants, birds and dragonflies. The raised boardwalk and lush grass droves allow easy access to a lost landscape of flowering meadows, sedge and reedbeds, where you can encounter rarities such as hen harriers, water voles and bitterns... Our grazing herds of Highland cattle and Konik ponies are helping to create a diverse range of new habitats." National Trust

Popped down the road to Wicken Fen this afternoon to follow the nature trail along the boardwalks and through the reed beds. There were dragonflies and butterflies galore, and we were even lucky enough to spot the Konik ponies. Not the sunniest of days, but it was still warm, and more importantly dry.

After some tasty cake, we ducked and stepped inside the historic Fen Cottage to discover how people lived and worked on the fen in days gone bye. The Cottage is one of the last surviving buildings of a once thriving hamlet whose residents lived and worked on the fen. As Wallace would have said, a grand afternoon out!!

(Found it difficult once again to choose just one shot so lots of pony, butterfly and windmill extras! Chose this shot because I liked the light...)

(Sorry for getting behind with comments and replies again, but if I'm not out and about then I'm slumped in a heap recovering! I'll catch up with you all very soon...)
