Boating Woman

The only way to reach the town of Uranden is by boat. There is a small inlet about 4 km from Patzcuaro. It houses a couple of long boats (barely seen in the background) like on main Lake Patzcuaro, and a number of flat-bottomed boats that locals use to travel back and forth between mainland and island. All manner of people use these three-meter long, tapered crafts, from a flat-water canoeist in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, José Everardo Cristóbal Quirino, to the old woman shown in today's photo. The inlet is covered with lilies and surrounded by old willows giving it an otherworldly feel, especially with today's overcast sky. I can only imagine what it must be like on a misty morning.
