This is the view from the end off a road on the eastern side of the lake.  There is a drop off down to lake so no chance to walk on the narrow strip of pumice sand.  Around the corner is the Owhata Marae  where Hinemoa lived and from where she swam out to Mokaia Island.  Maori Legend
Across the lake you can see the outline of Mt Ngongotaha which is a Rhylolite dome which erupted within the Rotorua caldera.  The last major eruption in this caldera was about 240 years ago.  I also found out the lake has a mean depth of 10 meters or 32 feet.
