Everyday I Write The Book

Don't move a muscle ...

... they may get suspicious.

The American Museum of Natural History on Columbus Avenue is basically the set of Ben Stiller's Night at the Museum, in which a dowdy collection of stuffed animals and poorly laid out artifacts is threatened with closure because it is so boring and unimaginative.

Well it certainly is true to life. We actually had a good time laughing at how bad it was, not an interactive element in sight and the whole thing in glass cabinets. This is how museums were when I was a kid and this one hasn't moved on.

The Planetarium was good 'though, but I may be a member of a small elite of people of a certain age who have managed to nod off during The Big Bang. Only briefly - Whoopi Goldberg's voiceover didn't let you sleep for long.

The morning had been very different, after TSM showed the hotel manager her very positive review of where we are staying, the excellent Ink48. He was so chuffed he gave us free tickets worth $70 for USS Intrepid, which is just around the corner. So we took The Dizzle on the full aircraft carrier tour, above and below decks, and recalled that this ship featured in at least two Hollywood Movies, I am Legend and National Treasure.

But of course New York is really just one big movie set.

Central Park picknicking was nice again. Did some shopping - the staff in the shops here are generally very nice and often hugely entertaining - in one coffee shop they just kept singing and in the excellent American Eagle they were literally dancing as well. The Dizzle got well suited and booted in here.

Went up to Top of the Rock for a night time view of the city, which was impressive although less so than during the day - you lose your sense of scale amongst the mass of lights. A word of warning, the majority of food places shut down early so if you are going up after dark, eat first. I ended up with a dull starbucks egg sandwich.

TSM and I finished up on the hotel roof when we got back where they have a very popular bar with a really stunning view of Manhattan - not so high but more attractive. If you've ever seen one of our favourite films Moonstruck with Cher and Nicolas Cage you will understand when I say it was very romantic, drinking Brooklyn lager and cocktails and watching a pale yellow moon work it's way across the skyline ...
