'The Fort St George Of England'...

...Now commonly know as The Fort St George, it is the oldest pub on the river Cam. The Grade 2 listed  timber framed building on Midsummer Common, dates in part from the 16thC, although much altered and enlarged over the years. This is the back view. There is a beer garden at the front of the pub. The original unusual name of the pub reflects a supposed resemblance to the East India Company's Fort St George at Madras, (Now Chenna) in India. When The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the city they had lunch here  and although Prince George was not with them, a high chair had been made and inscribed with  HRH, Prince George. In my younger days it was where my friends and I would gather for a chat and a glass of wine. Very nice in the winter to sit in the inglenook beside a lovely open fire.
