When the going gets weird

Clapham High Street, Overground Eastbound

It was a busy day. Amazing what you can fit into a Sunday. In the morning Riot and I got ourselves up and into town early to visit the Photographers Gallery, which was just off Oxford Street. Upon arrival we were pleased to see that it was free entry before noon, which was a bonus. You don't get much for free down here.

We'd made the treck for the exhibition 'Made you look: Dandyism and Black Masculinity' which was really good. But we also had time to look around the Terence Donovan retrospective exhibition 'Speed of light'. There were some really great portraits in there I hadn't seen before and I really enjoyed his mens fashion work from the 60s. I'm not wild about the 80s supermodel stuff. I don't think it has aged so well.

Then in a total change of speed, we went to Progress Wrestling's "We're gonna need a bigger room, AGAIN" at the Brixton Academy. It was the biggest event they'd ever put on and our first time at a Progress show. Great card.

There was a pretty scary moment when one match was stopped literally seconds in. A wrestler called Sebastian took a really nasty high clothesline. I couldn't really see what happened from the nosebleeds. But he was out cold for quite a while and had to be stretchered out. Fortunately, we saw him leaving the venue under his own steam at the half time interval, although he looked understandably really pissed off.

For a few of the guys on the card, it was their last Progress event. They'd had the call to bigger things with the WWE. The crowd gave them a standing ovation.

I think I'll try and catch a smaller progress show next time. A bit far from the action. Plus the crowd atmosphere tends to struggle at the really big shows compared to in the smaller rooms. I'll look forward to the Ring of Honor tour in November for now. No budget for more Wrestling till I get some work coming in.

Getting back from Brixton on a Sunday night wasn't so much fun. When you're tired, multiple trains and walks to stations is just a pain in the behind. We ended the day with ackee, saltfish and rice and peas from a cheap takeaway shop near ours, whilst we caught up on the Bake Off. I don't imagine Holywood is going to get such a warm send off as the guys at Progress...
