Brown Roll-rim

Today was the first of three days at Whitemoor. On arrival we tackled the smaller woodland compartments, where there were a number of fungi including a selection of brittlecaps and some rather magnificent specimens of Brown Roll-rim Paxillus involutus

For much of the morning we were accompanied by an employee of Network Rail, who had come to learn how we carried out the botanical and entomological monitoring. It was good to be able to show her the many interesting species in just one small part of the site, but it did slow us up somewhat.

Unfortunately, by the time we broke for lunch at about 2pm, the weather had started to deteriorate, with some light rain. We eventually had to admit defeat when we spotted a very dark cloud heading straight for the site!! It proved a wise move...
