Devil's Tower - Crook Co., WY - back blip

After leaving Cheyenne, we drove north for several hours and stopped at Devil's Tower National Park. This geologic "stock" was formed by magma which cooled underground and was later exposed after millions of years of erosion. President Theodore Roosevelt designated Devil's Tower as the nation's first national monument in 1906. The site is considered sacred to the Lakota and other tribes in the area. There are some neat legends about this structure. You may recognize it if you saw the movie, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
