Aye, they don't make 'em like this anymore. A piece of string pulls the tuning indicator along which in turn is wound around a bobbin (with spring to maintain tension) that turns this air-spaced capacitor. It's a joy to see.

The inside of the Rotel; dusty but otherwise in good shape. Amazingly well built with little discrete circuit boards for different functions: radio, pre-amp, power-amp, PSU. The capacitors on the PSU board are pretty crispy so I think they need to go to solve a slight noise issue that irks. All of which led me down the winding path of internet searches to look at cheap USB oscilliscopes. There's a surprising amount out there...

MRI done and dusted, and sure enough there appears to be some dodgy looking bulges. It's quite a thing to be able to see inside people. Medical Physics FTW! One of the issues with the change in diagnosis is that the prescription has completely flipped around: exercise is out until the discs have settled, which means that the exercises that +1/2 was doing have only aggravated the issue. It's going to be a long road to recovery.
