Cannonballs

The fort in Heraklion, known as Koules, dominates the harbor and is a prime tourist attraction. Being tourists for a few more days, we wandered out there this afternoon to look around. We were only given 35 minutes as it closes at 15:00 each afternoon, but that turned out to be plenty of time to see the very well restored rooms of this structure that dates back to the Venetian times of the 1500's (though there is speculation that something has graced the harbor entrance since the Arab period of the 9th and 10th centuries). Loved the hundreds of cannonballs lining this room, loved this space.
