Tiny Tuesday : : Crown of Tiny Flowers

OilMan left for the dermatologist this morning with some trepidation this morning to have a skin cancer removed from his nose. I had heard him telling the nurse on the phone that his nose was already so messed up that he didn't care what it looked like, which left me feeling some trepidation myself. The nurse made him an appointment for a Mohs procedure anyway. All went well, and the estimable Dr. Peng (wearing blue shoes these days)  once again managed to remove all the cancerous tissue on the first go so OilMan only had to sit in the 'holding pen'  special waiting room once before being patched up with a bandage and sent on his way.

Autumn is definitely in the air these days with chilly nights, but the sun has reappeared sporadically today in a sky full of fluffy white clouds. The beautiful fall color that I have grown to look forward to in this town of many trees seems to have been co-opted by periodic heat spells, resulting in a lot of dead, dry leaves on the ground.

I spent the morning making more sauce with the last of the tomatoes, vying with the bees to harvest some basil. I don't think I can make enough pesto to use up the rest of our thriving crop. The tarragon is also threatening to overflow the herb bed which presents a different problem since one can only make so much sauce bernaise and it doesn't freeze. I can't help feeling a bit smug about the success of this herb bed since in Berkeley we had to special order tarragon plants which promptly died in our damp, shady garden, and the basil was eaten by snails before it had a chance to grow.

I went up to the flower garden which is most definitely in autumn mode. Most of the flowers are finished and the ones that refuse to stop blooming are producing either small versions of their former selves or, in the case of the zinnias, little crowns of flowers which will become the seeds for next years' crop. I love these versatile flowers of many colors and many forms and usually have at least a few in the house. We couldn't grow zinnias in Berkeley either, although ferns did nicely….
