Not from Moscow

Originating in Mexico, these birds are known as Muscovy ducks because of  a musk like scent associated with the male, of which this is one. Although they hybridise with mallards, there is little to suggest that this is a hybrid, except for it being solitary. However, they do not form large flocks, so a solitary male may not be unusual.

This one joined the general mad rush across the grass when a woman came through the entrance to the parkland around Western Springs Lake. She had a loaf of sliced white bread which she doled out in small amounts as she walked briskly along the path. Followed by a teenager on a scooter, and many ducks, pukeko, geese, feral pigeons and sparrows. The swans likely also came as she was walking towards where they were hanging out this afternoon.
