13th: the documentary

Sue’s cold almost went away and then came back with a vengeance. We’ve both been caring for grandchildren with one virus after another. So today we spent a quiet day recuperating, and we watched one of the finest documentaries I’ve ever seen. Perhaps the finest. Ever.

If you are a US citizen, you must see this documentary. If your life is in any way impacted by the policies of the US government or the culture of the USA, you must see this documentary. If you are puzzled by the behavior and violence of police in the USA, this documentary will explain it all for you. DuVernay interviews Angela Davis, Van Jones, and Michelle Alexander, the brilliant young woman who wrote The New Jim Crow, which I have raved about many times. She makes extensive use of photographs, film, and news clips from US history from the 1930s to the present. No US President’s hands are clean.

DuVernay talks about her film here. But don’t trust what I’m saying. See it for yourself. It’s on Netflix. I’m not sure how people outside the USA and Canada go about watching Netflix productions. At the very least, you can see the Trailer here.
