Gone fishing

This morning our son went back to his childhood haunt to teach his son how to catch the Stone Loach (Barbatula barbatula) a species of ray-finned fish, found in fast flowing clean rivers and streams that have a sandy, stony or gravel bottom.

They are to be found all over Europe, and usually located lying under a large rock waiting for food to pass.

They can be identified by the barbels on the lower jaw and by their unusual colouring of green, brown and yellow and only reach a maximum of 14 cm in length.

In just 40 minutes they had found over 10 fish and managed to catch one which went in the bucket so we could all have a good look at it, then it was released without harm.

I think the next time they go Stone Loaching they intend to bring waders after both getting soaked.
