Acadia National Park

After leaving Bangor, we headed to Acadia National Park where we hiked or drove through much of the 27 mile park loop road. It is located on Mount Desert Island and was designated a national park in 1919, the first to be established east of the Mississippi River. As usual, my pictures only show a tiny portion of this diverse area so I tried to share one with the most variety. We stopped at many of the highlights like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole and Otter Point. There are several ponds and lakes, tidepools, woodlands and mountains in the park. There are also different types of rock, one called Ellsworth Schist that has distinctive layers and Cadillac Mountain granite that contains flecks of black hornblende, quartz crystals and pink feldspar. As much as I've become so fascinated with all the different rocks that make up our Earth, I'm wondering if I should have been a geologist. We were blessed with another glorious, sunny day for this adventure.
