twinned with trumpton

By MrFT

Awake and the sun was rising just to the right of Ben Wyvis as I stepped out to get breakfast on; half an hour later we were on the road to Achnasheen with soup and sandwiches in the rucksacks and a plan to climb Fionn Bheinn. A glorious drive through autumn colours and deserted landscapes, some majestic mountains and flat calm lochs. Just after 9, we started up, pockets of cloud still lying in the valley and we slowly climbed up and the views to the south opened out; the cloud high enough to offer views way off. Slowly Sloich and Beinn EIghe hove into view; Liathach too.
And once up the initial steep climb, as we crossed the flatter middle section there was total calm; no wind, no sound bar the squish of boot on damp hillside. A joy. Eventually we popped out onto the summit ridge and peered over the sheer drop into the Fannaich forest, the lochs and hills colours a joy to behold. Five Munro Friday was just a few miles to the north, An Teallach stuck away over the back. A view and a half.
We spent the next twenty minutes on the final little bit before admiring a splendid 360 view of Torridon, Fisherfield, Fannaichs and many more besides.
Reluctantly we headed off; back down; completing in 3.5 hours which was pretty impressive given she's not done a Munro since April.
And off south - petrol at Inverness, we stopped for soup at Dalwhinnie and were home for 1830. Hot showers and baths, washing on, dinner under way.
A fabulous day. In a glass half full way it was a great wee adventure, action packed and never ending adventure; but in half empty 'we didn't get a week in Orkney' way too. Still - 188 done; 95 left. The end game gathers momentum.
