Above And Beyond...

Aberfan

The story of Aberfan is in my blip of the 49th Anniversary last year.

Yesterday, I was listening to BBC Radio Wales on the car radio. The presenter was interviewing a survivor who was 8 years old and in the school at the time. She explained she was sat next to her twin sister. She survived but her sister didn't.

I've seen the memorial garden from a distance but can't recall being in it. Today I changed that. The blip photo shows the graves of all the 114 school children who were buried together. 144 lost their lives.

What made the man made disaster even worse was the behaviour of the authorities, the National Coal Board, Politicians and the Government, and Charity Commission, afterwards.

There was denial, cover-up, lack of empathy, lack of help, 'theft' of charity money, and much much more. You wouldn't believe it and couldn't make it up. Through it all the Community stood together and fought until all was righted.

Prince Charles attended today and the Queen has attended many times before.
