Forefathers Monument - Plymouth, MA

We departed Portsmouth, NH after attending a beautiful Mass at Immaculate Conception Church. Enjoyed a tasty lunch in Peabody, MA and then braved the ride through Boston, actually under Boston since we took the I-93 tunnel. We visited Plymouth Rock, which is actually only 1/3 its original size, and saw a replica of the Mayflower. Then we stopped at this impressive statue at dusk. From their brochure: "The 81-foot tall granite work was designed by Boston architect Hammett Billings in the late 1800s and is the largest free standing granite monument in the US. The central figure of Faith is surrounded by figures of Liberty, Law, Morality and Education, which represent the principles of the Founding Fathers. The monument was completed in 1888." We ended the day with quite a hike to the Miles Standish Monument in nearby Duxbury. This blustery Fall day would have been close to perfect if we hadn't noticed one plaque on the grounds by Plymouth Rock. It reads, in part: "since 1970, Native Americans have gathered at noon...in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving Holiday....to them, Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of their people, the theft of their lands, and the relentless assault on their culture."
