Today's Special

I've had a delightful visit from my longtime friend Endless Weekend, including plenty of time for conversation, as she arrived late Friday afternoon and left mid-afternoon today. That's much more satisfactory than our usual phone calls!

It was cool and rainy today, and the delicious eggs and bacon cooked by Phil for our mid-morning breakfast really hit the proverbial spot. We lingered over the repast, and then headed to the Whatcom Museum to view the newest exhibits. We started with National Geographic's 50 Greatest Photographs, taking our time over each photo, relishing their diverse settings and subjects, and the photographers' skill. As we'd arrived just after the museum opened, the gallery wasn't too crowded, and I enjoyed looking for photos myself as the viewers moved through the exhibit. Seeing the two individuals in today's blip strike the same unintentional pose pleased me!

EW and I were equally delighted with Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates, amazing images by photographer Susan Middleton of ocean dwellers, large and small, that most people rarely see. It was fun to share our mutual delight in the beautiful -- and sometimes humorous -- portraits of these ocean denizens.

After warming soup and a final chat at a downtown cafe, EW headed south to her home, both of us refreshed by our time together.

(There are two short videos about Middleton's fascinating work, showing several of the images we saw today being made, at the link above that I highly recommend. If you're short on time, watch the first one, just nine minutes long -- and then come back later to see the other one, which takes twenty minutes to view. You can see several of the portraits from the exhibit in the final four minutes.)
