Macchiato

Monday - and another big operation. This time a little girl called Teringo, whose face had been scalded by boiling water six years ago, when she was 4. during that time, the burned skin had contracted  and her chin was pulled down towards her chest so that she was unable to lift up her head and her grotesque facial appearance had caused so much bullying at school that she had left.(see extra). Dr Einar, a Norwegian surgeon born in Ethiopia is an experienced burns surgeon, and I photographed his operation to release Teringo's burned skin and give her back a chin and the ability to look up.

Meanwhile in ICU, Sufi was being woken from anaesthesia - she had been kept asleep overnight to protect her new graft. Gro and Alvaro took it in turns to sit with her in the evening and throughout the night to comfort her and make sure that all went well.

An army marches on its stomach, and a theatre team needs macchiato.
