Mooroopna Hospital 1876

This is the hospital where our first child was born in 1964. The Mooroopna Hospital stands in ruins on the banks of the Goulburn River. The first patient in 1876 was an aboriginal man with a broken leg . The isolation ward and the laundry were added in 1882.  May 1886 saw the first operating theatre built.
In January, 2011 this historic hospital was destroyed by fire and it was determined not feasible to attempt to repair the damage. The heritage advisor opposed demolishing the building because of its "historic, social aesthetic and architectural significance". It is hard to imagine how any of this could be used in further development. Meanwhile, it stands abandoned. Covered with graffiti throughout (which tells its own story), I found it had a real beauty about it, in spite of its condition. I will add a couple of extras. It was a great venue for our U3A Photography grouxp.
