Drowning our sorrows

Well before we even seriously considered the possibility of a Trump victory, we had arranged a dinner party for tonight. Under the circumstances, it seemed like as good a way as any to drown our sorrows (although alcohol consumption was actually quite modest).

The idea was to have an Indonesian barbecue - sate, peanut sauce, sambal etc -but with the threat of rain and lightning, I made an alternative main dish this morning, just in case. At the last minute , we took a chance on the barbecue, and just as well, as there wasn’t a spot of rain. One guest arrived half-an-hour early (unforgiveable, lucky she was an old friend) and another was flying in from São Paulo and arrived ¾ of an hour late. I’m never ready, so late’s good for me. Anyway, all went very well. I had been a little worried that the guests wouldn’t jell together well, but that concern was dispelled in the first few minutes and everyone seemed to relax and enjoy themselves.

The cream on the cake was Brazil winning a World Cup qualifying match against Argentina, our arch rivals, by 3 goals to nil. We just watched the end of the game.
