West Rock from East Rock

Connecticut is really quite flat so, being Carlyles, when there is a hill we go up it! Becky was back at work today so we ate a leisurely breakfast and then set out for Orange Street to see if we could remember the trail to the Soldiers and Sailors War Memorial(Civil, Independence, Mexican wars) on the top of East Rock.

With a bit of help from a local, we found the trail up through the Fall woodland. It was very pretty but sadly no chipmunks to be seen. This is the view of the East Rock suburb, looking across to West Rock in the distance. East Rock is a volcanic sill. The soft sandstone around it has eroded leaving the basalt sill (thank you Tony for that bit).

We found the Giant Steps Trail at the end of the rock ( and giant steps they were indeed) and descended to English Drive, walking back through Rice Field to Orange Street and from there to Dave's at the East Rock Cafe for very yummy bacon and egg sandwiches and to share a muffin. The young woman behind the counter remembered us from yesterday, which was nice.
