Weaving Close-up

Part of the Shibori symposium was a display of spectacular artwork done by fiber artists from various countries who were invited to participate. The building where the exhibit took place is itself worth the trip to the village of San Agustín Etla, about 40 minutes from Oaxaca, depending on the speediness of the taxi driver! In the extra, you can see a stairstep fountain that has turned pink by the use of cochinilla, a red dye that originates from an insect that lives on a type of cactus.
I chose this particular weaving to show because it was created by a man who was staying in the apartment above us, and we all got to know him and his wife - both delightful people (in their 80's). For anyone out there who is a weaver, I included the information about the type of weaving, which is quite complicated. The other two photos are examples of shibori.
