To see a universe in a patch of ice

To see the world in a grain of sand...
      William Blake's Auguries of Innocence

Sometimes patterns turn up in nature that just seem otherworldly. This small view (15 x12 cm) of  the ice covering our lake is such a pattern. The view is very small, but it also reminds me of Hubble pictures of the universe.
Is that all a bit philosophical?

The extra shows the view across the ice, rather than looking down into the ice. The darker area running across the middle of the ice is where the current flows. It is frozen but I guess the ice is much thinner.
No-one is going out on our ice yet!
