Kendal Castle

Today's the day ...................... to dispel the myth

This is Kendal Castle - or at least all that's left of it - catching the first rays of sunshine that suddenly appeared out of a misty sky late morning to turn the day into rather a pleasant one.

There's a popular myth that Kendal Castle was the home of Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII of England - but I'm sorry to say that it wasn't.  It was built in the late 12th century for the Lancaster family who were Barons of Kendal. It did eventually became part of the inheritance of the Parr family when Sir William Parr married the Kendal heiress, Elizabeth de Ros, during the reign of Edward III of England. But by the time Katherine was born in 1512, the family had long deserted the castle, which was already falling into disrepair.

It makes a good story though .............................
