Playing with Snakes

Super workshop at the Belair NP today.

This is a tree snake - not a local species, and not especially deadly. Whilst all of our snakes in this country are venomous, some are more venomous than others.  (Except blind snakes, and they are completely safe).  (And we get legless lizards that don't bite either, which look a bit like snakes, but they aren't really).

The deadliest snake we have in Australia is the Coastal Taipan, and if you see one of those, you really don't want to get near it.  We don't have them in SA.

Most, if not all, of the snakes in the Belair NP are more interested in escaping from danger rather than turning around and attacking.  The handler let a wild brown snake loose in the grass, and clearly all it wanted to do was find some safe haven.

This type of workshop goes a long way towards dispelling the fear of snakes, and probably more importantly, goes into great detail as to what to do in the extremely unlikely event you are bitten.

One of the best I've been to so far.
