Today's Special

A Contented Couple

I spent a good part of today wrapping Christmas gifts, using the dining table as a work surface and looking out through the wall of windows to the deck in between searching for the scissors and tape.

It was hard to stay focused on wrapping when our resident birds of all sizes, from tiny Anna's Hummingbirds to these enormous Pileated Woodpeckers, spent the day feasting at the various feeders on the deck!

The male woodpecker featured today was accompanied by his mate, as seen in the extra. After sunning herself for a bit, she hung gracefully from the bottom of the low feeder and quietly ate. Meanwhile, the male woodpecker rammed that long, sharp beak repeatedly into the high feeder's seed and suet cake, pleased with the selection. A number of smaller birds were happy to clean up the bits of suet and tiny seeds that he dropped. Plenty for all!
