The Wall

The weather hadn't really improved much. We started the day by going to the Roman Army Museum at Greenhead. Another fascinating place. Not as diverse perhaps as the Vindolanda museum but as someone with an interest in the Roman military, it was well worth a visit. We did intend walking along the nearby Walltown section of Hadrian's Wall, but the weather turned a little nasty with short but heavy bursts of rain spoiling any attempts to make it up to what is the highest surviving stretch of the wall.

Plan B was to head along to Housesteads and see if that would give enough time for the weather to improve a little, but we only got as far as Steel Rigg and the route along to Sycamore Gap which we had wanted to shoot since we passed it on the way to the hostel the night before. It was a great wander along the section of wall, passing the remains of mile castle 39 (which lies in the dip immediately below where this shot was taken) to get to the site (which lies in the dip beyond) and apart from a couple of brief showers at the start of the walk the weather stayed dry and the sun actually made an appearance long enough to get some shots.

Returning to the hostel we tucked into some more home cooking prepared by A, Pacham Chicken. Another treat for the taste buds. Then it was to bed in preparation for the journey to York.
