DRAMatic

What a day!

In the 28 days of Scottish island days on our New Year trips, we've barely seen the sun. It doesn't matter. We love battening down the hatches. But this year, we may be in for some treats and a little balancing of the averages.

The morning began with beautiful light over Lagavulin Bay with seals basking on the rocks, a heron fishing and an airborne buzzard catching the warm glow. It feels special already.

This morning, we took a short circuit around the Mull of Oa. There was high level cloud by this stage but dramatic cliffs and an imposing monument to two boats torpedoed in the war made for a gorgeous and thought-provoking walk. It was also most peculiar for smelling the distinct aroma of goats cheese on the way past some moorland goats.

After coming home for lunch, we headed back out to the Singing Sands which we'd timed perfectly for the sun reappearing. We walked first to an unusual square white lighthouse which looked Grecian as one side caught the low light, followed by the beach which was petite but still ranks amongst one of the most beautiful beaches we've visited with craggy outcrops and foaming waves. We both thought we heard some singing through the rocks but it could have been wishful thinking!

Rich then hoped for a wee dram of whisky with me keen to watch the sun setting. Remarkably, the perfect solution arose on the way home. We stopped at the Laphroaig distillery, right on the sea front, just for a quick look. Rich headed inside and was overjoyed to find whisky being served. And more than that, to be given a free taster. Bringing it outside, we stood in a little sheltered alcove of the distillery, only a few metres from the sea, as the sun sank into the Atlantic. My sip tasted amazingly smoky and warming as we stood, absorbed by the theatre on the horizon.

After watching the rest of the sunset from the living room window, we've had dinner and are now settling down to the second half of series one, The Dectectorists. Intothehills recommended this last year and Little Dog bought it for us for Christmas. Superb, thank you ITTH!
