Transit Strike

For the second time in a week, the taxis, buses and combis went on strike. Instead of blocking the gas stations as they had done last Sunday, this time the drivers took to the streets to express their outrage. This access road from Mex 200 (the main/only highway transecting Zihuatanejo) was filled with idle vehicles that would have normally been transporting workers and tourists both. Tourists could easily sit at the beach, but the poor workers who rely on buses and combis were forced to walk rather than ride. The protest was mostly peaceful, I watched the group blocking the highway act as transit cops, waving through cars coming from one direction then the other, but our pool guy mentioned that the state police had struck protesters during some point in the day. The entire country is in turmoil because of the dramatic rise in gasoline prices last week and even our town, which is normally spared such upheavals, is being affected.
