No hurry...

I took a slow stroll round our orchard and the rather moist woods by the house this afternoon. Although warm, there was the distinct scent of early autumn in the air. Several edible species of fungi were in quantities worth picking, among them Boletus edulis and Lactarius deliciosus (saffron milk cap?). Many people have a mania for edible fungi here, including W.F. whose fish you saw yesterday. They spend as much time as possible picking, cleaning, pickling, cooking or drying; each good specimen worth more than gold.

Our snails are edible too, but we leave them free to roam. I heard a story of someone who once collected a bucketful and oh how he laughed as he picked them from the walls of his flat the next day:)
