Old Yards of Kendal No.3

This is the narrow entrance to the Old Police Office Yard. It is a narrow passage which makes photographs difficult.
The police headquarters and the fire station were through this passage as were the cells.

Kendal had one of the earliest police forces in England and in 1838 there was a Superintendent and three constables.

In 1844 the Borough advertised for a Superintendent of Police. A salary of £80 per annum was offered with an allowance for clothing, house rent and taxes free.
I reckon that was pretty good in those days.
