Anonymous High Aperture VR Pillarbox 1879

Built in cast iron by Andrew Handyside of Derby's foundry. Called 'Anonymous'  because he omitted the Royal Cypher, VR and the words 'Post Office'. Sometime during the next 13 years it was redesigned as the slot was too high and mail often got caught under the rim. The spikes were to stop people climbing on them also to deter traders from putting their wares on top. I noticed this newly painted box in Priory Rd, Cambridge.
