Nesting

This little goldfinch was taking a rest before joining the fray at the feeders. It won't be long before they are nesting and we'll be seeing them with bits of twig, string, grass and all the other ingenious things they use to make their homes.

Nesting on a human scale is considerably more complicated.I don't know how it is possible to spend as much time as I did today looking for some baskets to put on the shelves we had installed in the closet last week. OilMan seems to be psychologically unable to close a door, cupboard or drawer and this closet is right by our front door, so the only answer was to get something to hold and organize the tools, cameras, binoculars, flashlights, vacuum cleaner parts and scarves that have been thrown in there.

It is a mystery how OilMan can even manage to leave  a self closing drawer open. Perhaps the pain of paying for the baskets will reform him, but I doubt it. I thought for sure he would be cured when he cracked his head on a high cupboard door which he had left open not five minutes earlier. No such luck...once he had retired to his bed with an ice bag, all thought of cause and effect had vanished.

Good excuse for buying some baskets however. His oft repeated complaint that "we already have tons of baskets/pillows/books" fell on deaf ears. I didn't even bother to explain about how they have to match, and look nice...design concepts which are important to me and absurd to him.

Although some birds' nests are a marvel of design and engineering, I don't think matching materials is any more important to them. than it is to OilMan...must be the engineer in him....

He's actually quite tidy and has many other excellent qualities, however, so I'll keep him. Undoubtedly I drive him up the wall too but he has the good sense not to complain very often....
