Most enchanting place on earth

"I believe in giving visitors an experience," said Antony Hunte handing us a tiny glass of rum ( 42 % alcohol )as we sat on his verandah overlooking his two acre garden created from a sink hole I.e  collapsed cave.
Hunte's Garden is a most most extraordinary  garden with one of the biggest tropical plant collections in the world.

And the BBC  will be featuring it in Gardeners World this March.
The garden  boasts the title of "the most enchanting place on earth". Well, I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. But it certainly is in the Caribbean .

We had been told if you visit only one garden in Barbados make it Hunte's gardens.
Well we did two others  - the Orchid garden and the Andromeda garden now a National Trust Property but Hunte's remains the most quirky and spectacular.

Created in 2007 by it owner -"I had the money and the time to do something different" -this is a relatively new garden but because of its tropical location everything grows fast and big.

But what makes it different is the presence of Antony Hunt , one of the island's rich eccentrics, busy chatting to all his visitors, the quirky nature of his design coupled with sculptures and unexpected seats  dotted throughout this tropical paradise.

Oh yes he insists on everyone having a toteof rum at the end. Now I know the meaning of the expression " it blows your head off".

It is clearly a garden created with a great deal of love and attention.
He lives there alone.
