The Lime Kiln, Kakahu

Built in 1876, this Lime kiln was used through until the early 1900's for producing Lime for agriculture and building. Originally a wooden tramway led from the quarry further inland along the top of the hill, and the Lime was then poured in through the top as the fire burnt at the bottom of the kiln.

Today there is a still a quarry at Kakahu, but the kiln stands quiet, a remnant of a past time.
