Sgwarnog: In the Field

Given their next match is a home-tie against Arsenal in the last 16 of FA Cup, kudos to the loyal band of Sutton United fans that made the 460 mile round trip for the potentially more mundane matter of a Tuesday night National League fixture at Guiseley.

Having missed news and social media for most of the day it was a surprise to find one of the National League's star names, John Rooney, on Guiseley's team sheet.  Having got stuck in a contract conundrum at Wrexham Guiseley have offered him a home until the end of the season at least and will be hoping he offers a little extra in their fight for National League survival.

It was a game of much huffing and puffing and the not quite beastly crowd of 664 were kept busy checking their night sky apps to assess exit velocity and re-entry tangents for the oft lofted ball.

Guiseley took an early lead through a neat header from Jake Cassidy but Sutton drew level through a Matt Tubs penalty. Play ebbed and flowed but Guiseley were showing most initiative in the final quarter. So who else but Rooney to come up with a winner in the 93rd minute?

The victory has taken Guiseley out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. Given they started the campaign with seven consecutive defeats, and took only three points from the first available 39, it has been a strong recovery from the Lions. It will be a tense last few months of the season.

And a final word for Sutton United and their fans to wish them all the best against Arsenal next Monday night.
