According to the Rowntree Trust, there are now 19 million people in this country who can't afford the basic necessities that make up a simple but adequate life. 2017 population is 65.5 million, so we are talking about nearly a third of the population unable to live contentedly, without anxiety about basics. The Tories always dismiss the Rowntree Trust as too left wing.
