UNfit for purpose

A few people I know here live at the UNICEF compound. We were invited by Rob from CARITAS, a budding project partner, to eat dinner at the guesthouse and got an insight into UN system politics. They sound entirely tiring and completely out of sync with the UN's mission: pettiness over wifi passwords, infighting amongst UN agencies, 100% hikes in the cost of lodging, procedures that don't fit the realities on the ground. Working in the UN system sounds good on paper with job security, benefits and influence in decision-making but if you want to be effective in the development sector I'm not sure it's the most suitable place.

Dennis the Irishman has been living in Yambio town for 20 years, teaching within the diocese. A good encyclopaedia of information around the dinner table.

The men from the Christian brotherhood e.g. Dennis live opposite the complex that houses the sisters. According to Benneth this is because 'you cannot put the cat and mice together in the same house'.
